The aim of the BOPA Geriatric-Oncology Special Advisory Group is to set direction for the advancement of the field of geriatric oncology within BOPA and at national and international level. The Group will promote incorporation of pharmacy professionals into geriatric oncology multidisciplinary teams supporting medicine optimisation and patients ‘education.
Role of the group
Education
Scope out and develop pharmacy education in the field of geriatric oncology
Integrate geriatric oncology into pharmacy professionals’ schools and training curricula and promote involvement of trainees in education and research
Provide educational material and organise formal educational activities focused on geriatric oncology for practising pharmacy health care professionals
Educate the general public about the relevance of providing age-appropriate care for older adults with cancer
Clinical practice
Promote the development and implementation of pharmacy models to provide optimal care for older adults with cancer
Develop consensus, guidelines and recommendations for the optimal treatment of older adults with cancer
Develop toolkits for NHS pharmacy providers to establish centres of excellence in geriatric oncology
Research
Promote meaningful and relevant clinical trials to older adults with cancer and enhance the level of pharmacy input in trial design
Promote research to evaluate the benefits of the inclusion of pharmacy in geriatric assessment-allocated treatments and geriatric co-management to improve treatment outcomes for older adults with cancer
Promote the use personalised medicine and pharmacy technologies to enhance the understanding of the interplay between cancer and ageing
Collaborations and partnerships
Develop and strengthen links between BOPA-SIOG-ISOPP and the geriatric oncology workforce, international specialised agencies, global and regional professional organisations, policy makers, and patient advocacy groups
Promote the inclusion of specific provisions for delivering high-quality, evidence-based care for older adults in national cancer control plans in Primary and Secondary Care
Create national funding mechanisms aimed at fostering pharmacy professional development of the geriatric oncology workforce and promoting research on the interface of cancer and ageing

There are several affiliated groups with BOPA. The groups and BOPA work together jointly to promote excellence in the pharmaceutical care of patients with cancer through education, communication, research or innovation.
There are several subcommittees & working groups that report directly to the Executive Committee each month. These subcommittees & working groups support the executive committee and keep the organisation at the forefront of care.
The Executive Committee work on behalf of the BOPA members to prioritise and co-ordinate the many activities and workstreams required to achieve our goals
